Le format Commander était connu à ses débuts sous le nom d'EDH, pour Elder Dragon Highlander, en référence au cycle de Dragons Ancêtres légendaires que sont les cinq cartes Arcades Sabboth, Chromium, Nicol Bolas, Vaevictis Asmadi et Palladia-Mors.
Sheldon Menery, qui a popularisé l'EDH, a attribué son invention à un groupe de joueurs d'Anchorage, qui à son tour s'était inspiré d'un article paru dans le magazine : The Duelist #11 (juillet 1996)
